Helsinkiläinen ”mysteerijoukkue” tekee kriketissä historiaa ja pääsee Euroopan Mestarien liigaan

CRICKET CLUB Helsinki Cricket Club (HCC) created history this summer by being the first Finnish team to ever qualify for the ECL or the Champions League of cricket.

HCC is the first Finnish team in the European Cricket League. The T20 Finnish Championship team will meet the other European league champion clubs in a May-June 2020 competition. The European Cricket League (ECL) is the “European Champions League” of cricket, played from May 31 to June 7. 2020. The tournament will be played in T10 format, with matches lasting one and a half hours. ESTABLISHED IN 1972, HCC, the oldest registered cricket club in Finland, aims to rank among the top three.

“We have been strong in the One Day format. Through hard work and continuous training, we have been able to get things rolling and, as a result, become the dominant T20 Finnish Champion, ”says HCC Chairman Zahoor Khan in the release.

HCC’s Aniketh Pusthay, Adnan Syed and Maneesh Chauhan also play for the Finnish national team.

“It is a great honor and privilege to be able to play against the best in Europe. We try to play our own game and enjoy it. Being the first Finnish team in the ECL is to our advantage, as others do not yet know us and how we play. Hopefully we can reverse the mystery team status to our advantage, ”says HCC captain Zahidullah” Niki “Kamal.

The Cricket Association is pleased with the challenges ahead for HCC.

“The fact that HCC will play in the European Cricket League next summer is a great achievement and will raise the mood and expectations among Finnish cricket fans,” says Andrew Armitage, chairman of the Finnish Cricket Association .

HCC victorious by huge margin in season opener

HCC played Finn-Cricket club in their season opener of SM40 division 2 competition at Kauniainen. HCC batted first and recorded a huge total of 324 for the loss of 7 wickets riding on a good opening stand by Zahoor and Vineet, and later a blistering century by debutant Khaled, supported by cameos by Kamran and Srikishan.

While Vineet scored a well paced 58 to lay a solid foundation for the innings along with Zahoor, Khaled’s innings was special as it came up in 49 deliveries and literally knocked the stuffings out of the Finn-Cricket bowling attack.

Set the daunting total, Finn-Cricket openers were cautious to start with. However after testing the outside edge of the openers a few time, HCC opening bowlers broke through the ranks with both Khaled and Affan removing a batsman each within the first 5 overs. The batting side tried to consolidate for a while with good knocks by Ganesh and Ram , however it was the persistence of the HCC bowlers and efficient field placements by our Skipper Venkat, that resulted in periodic breakthroughs and dismissals of the Finn-Cricket batsmen.

We were able to bundle them up for a meagre total of 147 runs in the 26th over, with Venkat leading from the front with 3 wickets followed by Zahoor and Akhil with 2 wickets each. Arjith, Khaled and Affan picked a wicket each.

It was a tremendous performance, both in batting and bowling. Hope the form continues throughout the season. See the scorecard here
